Clinical Applications Of Drug Eluting Balloon-Part 1

Drug-eluting stents can inhibit the proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the vessel wall, balloon catheter and significantly reduce the restenosis rate after intervention compared with ordinary balloons and bare metal stents, but such stents also inhibit vascular endothelial repair, causing delayed or incomplete endothelialization, which is easy to induce Late thrombosis in the stent.
The application of drug-eluting balloons keeps the endothelialization of blood vessels intact and reduces in-stent restenosis, late in-stent thrombosis and major adverse cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention for small vessel disease, restenosis and bifurcation .
Studies have confirmed that DEB treatment of intra-stent restenosis, whether it is BMS or DES restenosis, is better than ordinary balloons, not worse than DES re-implantation, and it is more beneficial to avoid re-stent placement, expected to become the preferred interventional treatment.
DEB has the following advantages over DES: it avoids the overlapping placement of multiple layers of stents and reduces the impact on coronary anatomy. DEB can evenly coat the drug on the vessel wall, which can reduce the endothelialization delay caused by the uneven distribution of the stent metal rod .
